The ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test) 2-mile run is one of the events in the US Army’s new physical assessment. It measures a soldier’s physical fitness and general cardiovascular endurance.

  • While the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) was the Army’s standard for years, the ACFT was introduced to provide a more holistic understanding of a soldier’s physical capabilities.

The ACFT is the Army’s new physical fitness test; it has six events, including the 2-mile run. The other events are as follows:

  • 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift
  • Standing Power Throw
  • Hand Release Push-Up
  • Sprint Drag Carry
  • Plank

ACFT Run Standards and Scoring

The ACFT 2-mile run standards outline the minimum passing requirements for the ACFT run event based on age and gender, and this will contribute to the overall ACFT passing score.

Just like the APFT, the ACFT scores on a scale from 0 to 100. To pass, active-duty soldiers must secure a minimum of 60 points in each event.

  • Maximum score: 100 points.
  • Minimum score: 60 points.

ACFT Scoring

  • Time-Based: Dependent on completion time.
  • Age and gender-specific score sheets differ based on these factors.
  • Minimum and Maximum Points: 60 and 100, respectively.

How to do the ACFT Run Event

The two-mile run measures aerobic endurance. This test will commence within 10 minutes after the final soldier finishes the plank event.

Location:

  • The run can take place either indoors or outdoors, on a measured track with a good surface.
  • It’s important to note that the run shouldn’t be on rough terrain

Execution:

  • On the command “go”, the timing starts.
  • Soldiers run at their own pace.
  • No soldier should be pushed, pulled, or receive any physical assistance during the run.

Note:

  • Time Limit: Based on scoring criteria. 
  • Pacing: Soldiers can have pacers but no physical contact. 
  • Walking is allowed but discouraged. 
  • Physical help disqualifies the participant. 
  • Course: Must remain on the designated track.

ACFT 2 Mile Run Standards

The minimum score required to pass the ACFT 2-mile run depends on the age and gender of the soldier.

  • The maximum score you can get in the 2-mile run event is 100 points.
  • The minimum score required to pass the ACFT 2-mile run event is 60 points.

Other acft standards are as follows: acft sprint drag carry standards, acft plank standards, acft push up standards, acft deadlift standards, and acft throw standards.

Additional Considerations

  • Preparation: Rest, hydration, and warming up are crucial.
  • Identification: A visible number might be required.
  • Finish: Use the recovery area post-run.
  • Score: Use the ACFT Calculator to determine your final overall score.

The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) has been in effect since 2020, supplanting the APFT.

Tips on How to Max ACFT 2-Mile Run

  • The best part about the two-mile run is that it’s a mid-distance run. So if you’re an endurance runner, you won’t be very good at it. 
  • If you’re a short-distance runner or sprinter, you’re probably not going to be that good at it either because no one trains for a two-mile run except people in the military, mostly just the Army. 
  • Mid-distance runs mean you should vary your training between 400 and 800 intervals and longer distance efforts, probably at most 5K every other week. 
  • Important information for any commander of any Brigade size or above: five-mile runs at a nine-minute pace three times a week will not prepare your soldiers for this test or combat.

For optimum performance:

  1. Interval Training: Alternate between high-intensity and recovery phases.
  2. Cardiovascular Exercises: Biking, rowing, and swimming boost stamina.
  3. Strength Training: Push-ups and squats help.
  4. Regulating Energy: Maintaining a Consistent Pace
  5. Effective Body Restoration: Prioritize sleep and nutritious food.

By integrating these strategies, soldiers can excel in the ACFT 2-mile run, ensuring they are combat-ready.

How to Train for The ACFT 2-Mile Run

  • Training at shorter distances where you can maintain a higher pace than the race pace is good for helping you condition yourself to get a faster time on the two-mile run. 
  • Training at 400, 600, and 800-meter distances will give you an idea of what you can do for that distance, enabling you to figure out a good pace for your two-mile runs. 

Your training is now done, and you’re ready to run that ACFT 2-mile run. Start with an 80 to 85 % rate of exertion for that first mile; the second mile is where you have to leave it all on the table; your legs will do it.
