Professors of military science

Professors of military science are responsible to both a DoD chain of command and a non-DoD supervisory chain (the academic institution).

In these cases, the rater, intermediate rater, and senior rater will be selected from the DoD chain of command.

This ensures that evaluations are conducted by Army rating officials who are familiar with military leadership standards, mission requirements, officer development responsibilities, and Army evaluation policies.

Although professors of military science operate within an academic environment and work closely with university leadership, evaluation authority remains within the military chain of command to maintain consistency, accountability, and compliance with the Evaluation Reporting System.

Academic institution officials who are outside the DoD chain of command may provide input regarding duty performance, leadership, instruction, and coordination responsibilities, but they are not designated rating officials unless otherwise authorized under Army policy.
