3.F. (U) Revision of Paragraph 3–2c: Nail Polish and Nail Grooming Standards

This paragraph revision outlines updated grooming and appearance standards for nail polish and nail shape for both female and male Soldiers in accordance with Army Regulation (AR) 670-1.

Female Soldiers

Female Soldiers are authorized to wear solid color shades of nail polish that are not extreme.

Authorized Nail Polish Colors:

  • Solid color shades that are not extreme.
  • Examples of authorized colors include, but are not limited to:
    • Nude/natural shades
    • American manicure
    • Light pink

Prohibited (Extreme) Nail Polish Colors:

  • Purple
  • Bright pink
  • Red
  • Gold
  • Blue
  • Black
  • Hot pink
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Grey
  • Ombre
  • Fluorescent/neon colors
  • French manicure

Authorized Nail Shapes:

  • Square
  • Rounded

Prohibited (Extreme) Nail Shapes:

  • Ballerina
  • Stiletto
  • Arrow
  • Coffin

Nail Length Standard:

  • Female Soldiers will not exceed a nail length of 1/4 inch, as measured from the tip of the finger.

Male Soldiers

Authorized Nail Polish:
Male Soldiers are authorized to wear clear nail polish.

Grooming Standard:
Male Soldiers will keep nails trimmed so as not to extend beyond the fingertip.

Enforcement

Unit leaders will ensure compliance with these standards during inspections and in daily operations. Exceptions for medical or operational reasons must be appropriately documented.
