Maintain the knee of the forward leg in vertical alignment with the ball of the foot. Do not allow the knee to go beyond the toes or to the right or left of the foot. Lunging is a component of many Soldier tasks. Figure C-18 shows Soldiers performing a proper lunge. Conditioning and kettlebell or dumbbell exercises that involve squat lunging prepare Soldiers for functional tasks such as this.
